What Medical and Psychiatric Care Do You Get During PHP?

More than most outpatient programs provide. PHP is a clinical level of care, not a counseling schedule, and medical oversight runs through it:

• A psychiatric evaluation early in your admission, with review as your plan changes
• Medication management, including psychiatric medication and medication-assisted treatment for opioid or alcohol use
• Nursing oversight during program hours and monitoring of any ongoing withdrawal symptoms
• Routine drug screening, which is standard in day treatment and supports your plan rather than polices it
• Integrated treatment of any co-occurring disorders and dual diagnosis, including PTSD and trauma-related addiction

Can You Live in Sober Living While Attending a PHP?

Yes, and for many individuals it is the better arrangement. PHP takes most of the day, five days a week, then sends you home. If home is where substance use happens, or there is no stable housing within reach of the program, that gap undoes the clinical work.

Sober living and transitional housing closes it with a structured, substance-free environment and a routine that supports the treatment day. PHP runs at both the Brentwood and Columbia campuses, so location is usually workable. Raise travel arrangements during your intake call, since a daily commute you cannot sustain is one of the most common reasons day treatment breaks down.

Does FMLA Cover Time Off for a Five-Day-a-Week PHP?

It can. FMLA leave may be taken for substance use treatment provided by a health care provider, which is exactly what PHP is. Eligible employees get up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period, and leave can be taken intermittently, which suits a program that runs during working hours.

Two limits matter. Absence because of substance use itself, rather than for treatment, is not covered. And an employer with an established, non-discriminatory policy that has been communicated to all employees may still act under that policy.
